Why the Rider Waite Tarot?

Dr. Authur Edward WaiteThe Rider Waite Deck is one of the three older, modern Tarot Decks in existence and one of the most popular. Authur Edward Waite spent a vast amount of time studying the history and the indepth meanings of the Tarot. He sought to discover the "Key" to the Tarot and to find the answer which could unlock the "door" of the occult teachings as a unified discipline. The deck's artwork was drawn and coloured by Miss Pamela Colman Smith.

The reason that I have chosen to use the Waite Deck to teach the Tarot is two fold. The first reason being that the cards are beautifully drawn and explain the interpretive meanings in a very straight forward manner. The novice and master reader alike, can turn to the art when at a loss for the worded definition and find the meaning. The second reason is that Waite spent a great part of his life in pursuit of the occult and mystical sciences. He was well versed in the esoteric world, Kabbalah, Egyptology, Magik and science. He sought to understand the relationships among the occult sciences as a way to see into the soul of mankind. This knowledge can be seen in his recreation of the Tarot through the Rider Waite Deck.

The Tarot are comprised of 78 cards broken out as 22 Major Arcana or Trumps and 56 Minor Arcana or Lesser Arcana. The Minor Arcana are made up of 4 separate suites: Pentacles, Swords, Cups and Wands. Some Tarot decks have different names for the four suites, such as disks (Pentacles), knives (Swords), grails (Cups) and rods (Wands). Each Minor Arcana suite have (1) one Ace, cards (2) two through (10) ten, and a Page, a Knight, a Queen and a King. Each Minor Arcana holds one of the positions of the four elements and is associated with specific information.
