INTRODUCTION TO THE TAROT

Class Tarot01
Session III : Sacred Space and Minor Arcana Cups

Caring for your Tarot Cards

Reading Surfaces

Any surface will suffice when performing a Tarot reading for you or for another. The surface should be flat and free of any debris, liquids or items that are negatively charged or have harsh energies about them. An area that is free of animal and human traffic and has low to no breezes or winds is ideal. Using a cloth or sacred material to place your Tarot cards upon during a reading is preferred as this method honors the cards, the client and the space. There are no hard rules, any surface will work just fine.

Deck Storage

Your cards are sacred tools that you use when working with yourself and with other's higher selves. Your deck is a spiritually active item that moves and works with energy and light.

For this reason it is best to keep your deck in a special container, like a wooden box, or you may wrap your deck in a special cloth such as silk or pure wool. Anything that respects the nature of the work will serve your deck. Wooden containers, silk bags, woolen sleeves, glass pyramids, cotton wraps, and even in their original paper box are all acceptable storage devices.

Some people leave their decks open on their altars or in their sacred spaces. You should not allow strangers to randomly handle or play with your cards outside of a reading, as this will stain the energy field of the deck. If this happens, take your cards and shuffle them very well. Place them in a window where moonlight can bathe them overnight and then the sun can warm them for one day.

Setting the Intention

The most important point about containers is that you set the intention that this storage unit is a sacred space to house and protect your cards. To set this intention, simply hold your container or stand in the space to use and say aloud "I set the intention for this container to be the protector and sacred space for my Tarot deck." Allow your mind to see a light surrounding your container and/or space as you say this. Take a moment to feel the warmth and protection flow through you and into the space.
