Class Tarot01
Session V : The Major Arcana Cards; Shuffling Your Deck for a Reading and Formulating the Question
One of the most important and often times rushed step in preparing for any Tarot reading, is the shuffling of the cards. This step allows both reader and client to get fully present in the moment with the Tarot deck and with one another. During any reading, there is a fundamental exchange of energy between the reader, the client and the cards. Allowing the energies of the client to mix with the Tarot cards is an important step because the handling of the deck brings the client directly and experientially into the space of now and focuses them into their question. There is an exchange with the deck, as they imprint the cards with their physical energy.
Shuffling the deck opens the psychological and the parapsychological aspects of the client. There is an unconscious psychological ordering of the cards during the shuffle based on the question and intention set by the client in their consciousness. Then there is the parapsychological aspect, the client's relationship with the universal energies, Archangels, Spiritual Guardians, their higher selves; whatever energies are also working through and outside your client in this moment. Together, these two unseen forces manifest within the querent and through the cards to create the spread.
The question is the next important step when doing any reading or Tarot spread configuration. The question is the doorway into the subconscious and out into the spiritual realms. The question is the intention that the client brings and sets for the reading. As a reader, you want to take the time to help the client formulate their question and be sure about what they are asking. Watch for broad-based, open ended questions that have no point of focus. An example may be "What will the rest of my life look like?" or "How will my new job turn out?". The more specific you can get within a question, barring a yes or a no outcome, the more in depth the Tarot interpretation will be.
The reason that we want to avoid a question that yields a yes or a no answer is because with a definitive question, there is no room for exploration. Always remember that the Tarot is not a parlor trick or a magic eight ball game. This is a tool of divination and insight.
The best questions are ones that focus on the issue before the client. Many times the issue will be something that the client is emotionally charged around or finds hard to face. There may be pain of remembering an event or fear around what could be or not be. Always remember that as a reader, you are often given the gift of knowing this person on an intimate, emotional and energetic level whenever you work with them and the Tarot. Their question, their feelings and their presence is a sacred gift to the work that they are doing with you and the cards.
